Abel watched Jack as he led Abigail through the tall grass, stopping ever so often to stomp and send a swarm of fireflies into the air. Abigail’s face glowed with delight each time the air lit up around her, her shrieks of laughter sending a flock of birds to flight from the giant willow where they had been resting, and into the cooling air of dusk.
They made their way over to him, giggling as they found comfortable spots for lounging on the porch steps.
“Pa, can we see the horses today?” Abigail smiled in anticipation, “I want to feed Sunny. He likes when I feed him apples!” She said excitedly.
It was Abel’s turn to laugh. “Well, I suppose so. Are you feeling better about the horses now? You seemed pretty scared of Sunny when we visited the stables last week.”
“I’m very brave now, Pa!” She reassured him with confidence, sitting up straight on the stairs to face him, “Jacky says so! He lets me feed Sunny!”
Abel noticed Jack sink a bit on the step as he gave a meek smile, “I hope that’s ok, Abel.” Jack kicked a pebble from the limestone path, sending it flying low off into the tall grass, “I was very careful. Mom showed me what to do. I’ve been helping with the horses for a long time now, since Dad passed, really. That’s when mom started teaching me, or at least that’s what I remember.”
“As long as you two are careful, it’s ok with me,” Abel studied Jack’s face, searching for his own brother in Jack’s features. He continued, thoughtfully, “I’m glad you’re teaching Abigail about the horses. Thanks for showing her the ropes, Jack.”
Jack beamed, straightening his posture, “You’re welcome.” He paused, and took a deep breath, “Abel?”
“Yes, Jack?”
“Can we take Sunny out riding? Maybe just you and me? I remember the trail. Dad used to take me every weekend. Mom only takes me sometimes.”
Abel smiled, “Yes, Jack. I’d like that. It’s been a long time since I’ve been out riding, though. I guess, you’ll have to show me the ropes, too.”
